HISTORY
Before A Realm Reborn
Sumaya was born to Khasar Dotharl and Orghana Himaa, along with her twin sister, Zaya. Before the twins were born, Khasar was killed in an ambush in the Azim Steppe and their pregnant mother--who was left for dead--was found by a member of the Horo Clan, Duaa. Orghana remarried to Duaa and took her new husband's last name for her twin daughters’ protection.

After the death of her mother at a young age by a mysterious Steppe disease, the Horo Clan cast the twins out because they believed they were cursed to bring bad omen into the tribe. While Zaya was adopted back to the Himaa clan, Sumaya was found by Lalafell Ul'dan merchants. They toured Orthard for business and eventually settled in Eorzea, bringing Sumaya with them.

Sumaya found it difficult to read and focused her efforts in being adept with the bow. As a teenager, she was her father's right hand person and assassin in the shadows. After an accident that resulted in her adopted father’s death, Sumaya blamed herself for it and forsook the bow. She painted her face to remember her sin, left her adopted mother and her betrothed at the time, and took up the lance in Gridania to train and become an adventurer…

Before the Seventh Umbral Calamity

Under Construction!

Between Stormblood and Shadowbringers

Sumaya returned to the Azim Steppe to solve the mystery of her family and her place of origin, to find out why she was cast out. She met Tarkhan Horo, an dishonored assassin whom the Horo clan sent to kill her. She defeated him in the initial struggle and he was eventually recruited to her side.

Throughout her inquiries in the Steppe, she rescued the reincarnation of her birth father, Khasar Dotharl, a ten-year-old Xaela running away from the Buduga. While this reincarnation does not remember his past, he possessed the Echo, which allowed him to see glimpses of his former life through his connection with Sumaya.

With all three of them together, they investigated the nature of Orghana Horo’s mysterious death and the true reason why Sumaya was cast out by her clan. Finally, it was revealed that Orghana died of the hanahaki disease, a rare hereditary disease in the Steppe mostly contracted by those whose love for someone goes unrequited. The mystery of who she loved back then remained unsolved. Because Duaa Horo--Orghana’s second husband--was in the midst of the controversy surrounding Orghana’s death, Duaa could not stand to look at the twins and how much they reminded him of his late wife, and so he cast them out of guilt and created a narrative that they were cursed.

Eventually, Sumaya realized that she had a twin sister, whom she was too young to remember and had always thought of as her reflection in her childhood memories. After finding closure to the mystery of her parents and the Horo clan, Sumaya sought out to find Zaya and reunite with her.

APPEARANCE

Sumaya is a Xaela with brown skin, brown eyes, and golden limbal rings that intensely glow. She was born with black hair and remained that way throughout most of her childhood and early adulthood, but since taking up the mantle of the Warrior of Light, her hair gradually turns white from A Realm Reborn to Endwalker due to the overwhelming power of Light within her. She has an intricate dark war paint on her face that on her cheeks and her forehead that she has maintained since her adopted father’s death, to signal that she was mourning. She was 25 in the beginning of ARR, and 27-28 in Endwalker.

PERSONALITY (In Progress)

Sumaya has the hallmarks of the average Warrior of Light. Sumaya is resilient to the cruelties of conflict, but is not wholly immune to the emotional and physical toll it takes her. As time went on, she became more world-weary and rugged, and sometimes to the point of being more and more muted. She is sometimes prone to act brash, and often has to control her emotions and her anger. While kind-hearted in nature, Sumaya is guarded and not easily trusting of other people because of her old profession as an archer assassin. Despite her world-weary disposition as the story went on, she has learned to trust others more, especially the Scions.

When she was younger, Sumaya was mischievous and energetic, oftentimes getting in trouble with the local law. She changed after the death of her adopted father. While still bright-eyed, the intensity of her gaze always communicates a sorrowful soul. She is very empathetic towards other people, even her enemies. She understands her friends well and knows their dispositions. As a general rule, Sumaya is an active listener and won't speak as much except for three conditions:
  • To ask questions;
  • To threaten others;
  • To tell a story.

Initially, she is weary of romance and relationships for herself after the breaking of her engagement with her betrothed. She prefers her solitude and sometimes the company of good friends. She did not return Haurchefaunt’s feelings during Heavensward, but after his heroic sacrifice, she honoured his memory and came to realize she did have feelings for him except it was too late. She eventually and slowly develops feelings for Crystal Exarch / G’raha Tia after the events of Shadowbringers.
